CHALLENGE

Livongo had an amazing growth curve. Founded in 2008 to use digital tools in the management of Type 2 Diabetes, the company's $3.5 billion IPO in 2019 didn't just raise $350M for the company, it surged health-tech stocks across the board. Silicon Drive had been brought on board just months before, with managing partner Alec Marshall at the helm of brand and creative. The goal? Make a health tech company feel more human.

WHAT WE DID

Following extensive intrinsic voice, design direction, and psychographic brand studies, engaging both internal executives and external research agencies, we led a first-of-its-kind human-centered brand shift, literally wrapping people in the Livongo brand.

And in the midde of it all: COVID.

Then something weird happened. The world shut down. We turned on each other. We all went inside for a year. A human-centered health company, the majority of whose clients were the most vulnerable for both serious respiratory illnesses and the brunt of social injustice, needed a response – quickly. The marketing team set up a COVID response center and issues PR statements with a clear standing on social injustice, and we went to work underlining both with visual directions and a fast web update that left no misunderstanding: Livongo was standing by the humans it had wrapped itself around. From Kelly Close of chronic condition centered publication Close Concerns, "Note that if your company needs a model for anti-racism, and a clear, crisp, unmistakable approach, Livongo’s website is an amazing example.”

Living to the brand.

If there's anything a test of conscience does really well, it's secure you to your internal promises. "Guided by Humanity" was now literally at the center of the company's ethos, and it became a part of everything Livongo stood for. We continued on with the evolution of the visual and voice directions, landing on a mission statement of "Human-centered health and care", which came up in new talks for an acquisition of the post-IPO company. Livongo announced its acquisition on Oct. 30, 2020 for $18.5 billion, a record-breaking transaction for a health tech acquisition.

RESULTS

Livongo's sale marked a huge milestone not only for health tech messaging, which followed down the path of putting human care at the center, but for design-forward companies, which now report a 4X ROI for spending on world-class design movements (McKinsey).
